Whether you know her as Nida Pasha or Nida Yasir, there is no denying that this young starlet has made a name for herself not because of her illustrious show biz background but by dint of her own talent and hard work. Fashion Collection chats with her about her transition from a budding TV artiste during her carefree days as a single woman to her present position of celebrity married to a colleague.

Do you feel being Kazim Pasha’s daughter facilitated you in joining the acting profession?

I hardly think so. I had never thought of acting, but my friends were after me that I am photogenic and should try my luck in plays. So, I finally took part in one directed by my father, in which I had just two scenes where all I was expected to do was cry. My father was quite impressed with my crying abilities, but didn’t want me to pursue a career at that point as I was still studying. After I graduated he caste me in another play, ‘Daji’ but after that he gave me no more breaks as he felt people would think he was promoting me. He wanted me to make a name for myself on my own merit, without his support. It did bother me initially, especially because I know he gives other girls such opportunities that they become famous after a serial, where as I had to make it on my own. So it was more a disadvantage having parents in showbiz. It was only after I worked with Yasir Akhter in ‘Mera ghar aik whirlpool’ that I gained recognition and after that got a lot of offers for commercials and dramas. I started comparing and modeling too, after that.

Did you catwalk modeling as well?

I did a few shows-nothing spectacular-but frankly am not fond of modeling. I feel you do nothing in it except expose yourself. I was given a lot of offers by English magazines for shoots but since my father wouldn’t allow me to wear sleeveless, there were hardly any outfits that I could model. So, I only modeled for those magazines in which I was allowed to dress respectably, without exposing any part of any anatomy.

Had a secret romance been brewing while you and Yasir starred together in plays?

Actually, no. Yasir and I had never worked together almost till the time he proposed to me, and the one serial in which we had both starred, our entries were such that when I would be on location he was not required, and when he was on location, I was not in the scene. Then, prior to ourengagement, we worked together in one play, which was funnily enough, called ‘Mohabbat’, and Yasir apparently felt I’d be the right wife for him, so proposed. I had never thought of him as a prospective husband, though, and had left decisions about my marriage on my parents.

How did Yasir propose to you?

It was highly unromantic! There was no ambiance or formalities. He was dropping me home one day after work, and very casually mentioned that he’d be sending his parents over. I was puzzled, and when I asked why, he informed me that they’d be bringing a ‘rishta’. I had no whiff of it and was really shocked.

What was your family’s reaction?

My parents are very cool and I have a relaxed relationship with them. But, I refused Yasir initially, because I felt we hailed from two different cultural backgrounds-my father is Urdu speaking and Yasir’s family is Sindhi. I had been brought up in a liberal atmosphere and thought I might not be able to adjust to their family. So, I told Yasir we’d continue to be colleagues and friends, but he should forget about anything beyond that. However, Yasir was not comfortable acting with me after that and strangely enough, I began to develop feelings for him. Also, Yasir’s mother called and assured my family that we didn’t need to fear about cultural differences, as they were more similar in their ways than we thought.

My father made enquiries about them and after satisfying himself, agreed to the engagement. We got married after two years.

How come the long gap?

Yasir’s brother got married first, and in any case we wanted to get to know each other and our families better, so had decided to wait for a year. But later, Yasir’s father passed away so we extended the date further.

Do you feel there’s any change in your relationship since you got married?

Isn’t there always? I was mentally prepared that he would change once we were married. All men do. During the days we were engaged, if I’d call him up to tell him that I was free and ask him where he was, even if he was at the other end of the earth, he’d come to pick me up. Now, I wouldn’t dare call, for I know he’ll never have the time! It’s nothing unusual-men become more relaxed after marriage and invariably begin to take their wives for granted.

Why is it that you aren’t acting opposite each other any more?

Well, from the time we got engaged, directors started taking it for granted that we would work together so would cast us together in their plays. But after we got married, Yasir got fed-up of the monotony and was irritated by the fact that he had to land up with me in every play, although I was quite happy to be working with my husband. He told everyone that that if they want to cast either of us it would have to be without the other.

Doesn’t he mind you acting with other heroes?

He doesn’t say anything, but one thing is for sure- he doesn’t watch my plays with other heroes these days. Previously, he used to watch them and offer criticism, but not any more. He would be only too happy if I quit work, and he could take care of me! But, I feel it is essential for a woman to work – it gives them an incentive to be groomed and well maintained. I do feel though, that I got married at a time when my career was just growing and I had made a name for myself and could have gone places. Marriage, however, restricts you because you become time bound and can’t avail of all the opportunities that come your way to prove your mettle.

So how are you coping with maintaining a career and yet not setting your husband’s backup?

I’ve taken to compering shows. It’s less time consuming and brings you recognition. You remain in the loop, and I feel people become more familiar with your name than when you are acting, for people remember you more by the name of the character you are portraying than by your own. But, acting is my first love, and my son is a little older and my responsibilities become less, I’ll go back to plays.

What are you comparing currently?

It’s an interesting programme for Hum TV, called ‘Angan’. It’s a home show designed for women in which there are four segments, including one in which household tips are provided.

Born on October 12, 1980, Ayesha graduated from the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan, where she mastered the art of painting fine art.[3] She acquired fame with two of her hit singles, Aao and Koi To Ho.
Since her early days at school, Ayesha had been keen in theater and charity work. She was a president at her arts school and managed theater productions along with doing costumes and conceptual creative work.Her favorite coloris orange and she has a keen fondness for remarkably mediocre episodes of “College Jeans”, a lacklustre sitcom that failed to ignite any spark amongst bovine obsessed masses of Sargodha. She would dedicate her summers at the Rising Sun School for special children. At the sweet, tender age of eight, she started hosting a show with Muneeza Hashmi called Meray Bachpan Kay Din in which she would interview celebrities about their early days.
However, it was her break in the light teen comedy College Jeans that prompted her career in television. The show was directed by another NCA graduate Jawad Bashir and cast her alongside Ali Zafar and other prominent TV personalities. Soon after she was invited to host a show called Rhythm for Prime TV where she interviewed musicians from all over Pakistan including veterans like Arif Lohar and Shazia Manzoor.
She would even act with Nautanki, NCA’s drama group, even before she joined the college whence she gathered that a formal training is required. The National College of Arts (NCA) provided her every other reason to indulge into any prospect of performing arts. In 2003, a set of paintings that Ayesha created for her final NCA thesis generated excitement and controversy when exhibited. Interview with Good Morning Pakistan host Dr. Shaista Wahidi. Good Morning Pakistan's host, Dr Shaista Wahidi speaks on the celebration of her show's anniversary.

Pakistan's favourite television anchor Dr. Shaista Wahidi's story starts off on a similar note as any urban girl in her country. The Shaista of yesteryear, in her own words, was a young woman who felt she had to compromise to please her family. From marriage and kids in her teens to studying for a lost cause, she became a non-practising doctor to keep up with her parent's wishes. While this brought the reward of a happy family, destiny had other plans for the now famous TV host.

Out of sheer boredom during her time as a housewife Shaista decided to try her luck by entering a VJ contest for a local FM station. The experience was second to none and eventually helped shape her transition to television. Blessed with an abundance of talent, namely the gift of the gab, Shaista has managed to connect with her audiences at an altogether different level not seen on Pakistani television before. From the public to politicians, cricketers to celebrities, Shaista is undoubtedly the preferred choice of a nation, which is fast catching up to her mantra of positivity and hope.

As her flagship show, Good Morning Pakistan (GMP), celebrates its anniversary. Dr Shaista reveales her innermost thoughts about her journey to stardom and beyond.

Tell us about GMP on ARY, which in few years has become one of their leading programmes. How has the journey been?
GMP is my baby and I am proud of leading it for a years. Yes, it's challenging hosting and producing as this means looking after the content and participating in the overall planning of the show, but I am ably supported by my production team led by my senior producer Talat Raza. In our team, one thing is very clear that no one is the boss and we all have the right to be heard. It's a culture I love at ARY and am glad the channel has helped me cultivate a similar environment in the team.

The show is unique because not a single day passes when we don't receive calls from minister's wives or affluent families wanting to contribute or help about a certain issue that was discussed on that particular day. It's very touching because we have a responsibility to society and through GMP we have been able to establish a platform for people to connect and help.

Moreover it is my personal objective to empower the Pakistani woman who desperately needs a voice and practical advice in various facets of her life. We have had fantastic response for introducing new elements like career counselling, medical and skin care advice and summer camps and we intend to keep moving in this direction.

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to women?
I believe in substance. You see it's not about being a woman or man, it's about the individual. If you believe in yourself then it becomes a completely different story. The whole world starts to revolve around you once you gain that self confidence. I never wanted to be the usual complaining woman considering that is the most common image of a female in our society. On the contrary, I am a big fan of Rhonda Byrnes, The Secret, in which the law of attraction states that when you want something you must start believing in it and practice it as if you have it. I have applied this to enhance the power of positivity which people say I resonate but if you ask me I just dislike negative thinking.

Today I can proudly say I am at peace with myself. Besides this discipline is vital, which includes working out and keeping fit to beat stress, being health conscious and eating right. Mind you, all of these don't come without a strict routine. I was never like this but have evolved with time in order to pursue the goals I have set in my life. I guess it shows and perhaps this is why they look up to me.

Your following is equally popular with male audiences. According to a survey men find you the best looking and most pleasant host. What are your thoughts?
Well it's a plus point. I am aware of the fact that I am good looking and you are on the money about men watching GMP because of the looks. I see no harm in men liking women on the face of it as long as they are not hypocrites like most men in our society. I am glad they have at least admitted it in that survey but will be happier if they openly talk about their reason for watching others or me on the show whilst sitting next to their wives.

Television is larger than life to those watching at home and hence we do work consciously on the looks and makeovers for all the segments and hosts. For example I work with my designer Ruby Shakeel and stylist Mahjabeen who are responsible for making me look the way I do on the show. At the same time I am known to be choosy as I don't like wearing loud colours or busy prints.

Your most ardent admirers are politicians, cricketers and celebrities. According to them you are their favourite host because you bring the best out of them. What's your magic touch?
When someone is invited on my show I make it a point that they are treated as our houseguests including politicians and cricketers who are mostly grilled in interviews. I am fully aware that people want me to take them on and it's not that I don't but I just do it in a way which is subtle and humane. One of my memorable interviews was with our current Prime Minister on the eve of his win. My entire focus was on humanising Yousaf Raza the person and not Mr. Gillani the prime minister. To my surprise it took him just one question to start talking about his fondness for Indian films and specially Ashwariya Rai who is an absolute favourite of his, so much so that he used to watch Ash's movies during his days of imprisonment. Pakistan loved that interview and I got such great feedback even from the critics, which was a pleasant surprise.

The morning routine for the morning host
Firstly, I wish myself good morning before anyone else does. No matter how clic it is, my belief is that you must first learn to love yourself in order to love the world.

My husband is usually late home from work in the evenings as he's a workaholic but we both make it a point to spend the last hours sharing and catching up. Therefore, I go to bed very late despite the fact that I rise by six every morning. Once I'm up, I look forward to my three precious gems Shaafay, Fayz and Eman. Every day is a beginning full of energy and positivity in my life. As soon as I step out of the house I do a 360° from a devoted mother and a wife to an ambitious producer and host with a responsibility to lead a show, which makes a difference in the lives of millions every day.

Jodhpur, Aug 25 (IANS) Actor Salman Khan was arrested at the Jodhpur airport Saturday, a day after a district court here upheld a five-year jail term for him for hunting an endangered chinkara deer nine years ago, police said.

The actor travelled to the Rajasthan city by a Jet Airways flight and was immediately taken to the chief judicial magistrate's court here in a white gypsy.

The actor had earlier addressed reporters outside his Mumbai home, saying: "I have full faith in the law of the land and I will abide by (its ruling). I am going to Jodhpur to surrender."

A district and sessions court in Jodhpur Friday dismissed his plea against a five-year jail term and a fine of Rs.25,000 handed by the chief judicial magistrate's court.

In April last year, Salman had filed an appeal in the district and sessions court against the judgement of the lower court in Jodhpur.

The court had found Salman guilty under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Salman had spent three nights in Jodhpur Central Jail before the district and sessions court gave him bail.

On Friday, however, district and sessions judge Kamal Raj Singhvi rejected his appeal and upheld the five-year jail term and the fine. The district court also issued an arrest warrant against him.

The star of hit films like "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" failed to appear for the hearing Friday, saying he had missed the flight to Jodhpur from Hyderabad where he was shooting. However, his sister Alvira was in the court.

Salman has been convicted of poaching a chinkara deer at the Ghoda farm near Jodhpur on the night of Sep 28, 1998 while filming Sooraj Barjatya's blockbuster "Hum Saath Saath Hain".
A case was registered against Salman and five others under the Indian Penal Code, the Wildlife Protection Act and the Indian Arms Act Oct 11, 1998.

Sanjay Dutt was treated like any other prisoner, say jail authorities

Pune/Mumbai, Aug 23: Maharashtra State prison officials have said that no special privileges were giving to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt during his stay at Yeravada Jail, from where he was released today.

The conduct of the actor was good in the jail, they added.

"His behaviour was extremely calm. This is not the first time he has been in jail. So, he is aware of the issues that are involved. Neither did we resort to using any hard measures against him, nor did he misbehave in the jail. He was treated like any other prisoner in the jail," said S.C. Mathur, Inspector General of Police, Jails, Maharashtra.

Earlier today, Dutt, sporting a beard and a shaved head, stepped out of the jail and shook hands with police officers before leaving for his home.

Dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans, Dutt reached home, accompanied by his brother-in-law Kumar Gaurav, friend Yusuf Nalwala and lawyer Satish Maneshinde. His sister Priya Dutt hugged him.

Dutt told reporters outside his home that he was too tired to speak, but would hold a news conference later.

Dutt tried his hand at carpentry as a prison labour for which he was paid less than a dollar a day.

Dutt was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on Monday. The release was delayed as a copy of the Supreme Court's order did not reach the jail.

His lawyers had petitioned the Supreme Court against his conviction by TADA court and sought bail until that appeal was ruled on.

Dutt was sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment by a TADA Court under the Arms Act for possession of arms, including an AK-56 assault rifle at the height of the 1993 communal riots in Mumbai.

Five other convicts -- Sameer Hingora, Aziz Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Sheikh, Ibrahim Musa Chauhan, Yusuf Mohsin Nulwalla and Zaibunnisa Anwar Kazi -- were also granted relief by the apex court. They too were released today.

The apex court granted bail to all the six on the condition that they will report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Mumbai every week and will not abuse their grant of liberty and bail.

The TADA court is expected to give a copy of its judgment by August 27. Dutt, after getting a copy of the TADA court's judgment, will have to surrender before police.

Dutt has already spent nearly 16 months in prison before his release on bail in 1996.

He was welcomed by family and friends, some of whom had arrived from overseas. A coconut was broken at the doorstep of Dutt's home as an auspicious ritual.

Yash Raj Films has three films lined up in the capacity of producers - Fanaa, Dhoom II and Kabul Express - with the biggest of all 'Fanaa' gearing up for a May release. With just 8 more weeks to go for the film's release, the first promo of this Aamir Khan - Kajol has been unleashed. And the first reaction that comes up (just like most of YRF films) is - 'Fanaa' is a winner in the making!

Here we present you to an exclusive promo review of 'Fanaa' that is directed by Kunal Kohli [Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum].

No, 'Fanaa' is not a typical 'girl-boy-falling-in-love-in-Kashmir' story. It is DIFFERENT, howsoever cliched it may sound and this statement comes after watching the 45 seconds promo. There were murmurs abound about 'Fanaa' being a story of two young people in love in the troubled valley of Kashmir, but the promo throws up a big surprise.

As Aamir Khan walks casually in a wide passage of a place that looks like a vintage shopping center/historical place while being attired in a patched white shirt, blue jeans and a muffler round his neck, Udit Narayan hums to the melody of Jatin Lalit in the background. The next shot features Kajol in a different location. Attired in green 'kameez' and white 'dupatta', she looks every bit a Yash Raj heroine with a carefree swirling of her shoulder length hair.

From here things take a pacy turn with the sound of 'tabla' making way for a thunderous 'qawalli' track - 'Subhan Allah'. The top angle shot of men and women dancing in a concentric circles followed by a brightly lit monument ensure rich look of the film that boasts of great production values. While Kajol claps around and Aamir Khan dances along in a carefree manner (just like his character DJ in Rang De Basanti), more shots follow that has horde of women wearing long skirts and dancing to the ethnic fusion music.

A few romantic/light hearted moments between Aamir Khan and Kajol are seen on the screen but the one that stand out is the shot that has both the lovers sharing a toy car in an amusement park! Finally comes the defining moment in the entire proceeding as Aamir Khan holds Kajol's palm and makes it rub past his face. As her character cherishes the most romantic moment of her life with Aamir kissing her palm, the only dialogue in the entire promo comes in the background in Kajol's voice:

"Tere Dil Mein Meri Saanson Ko Panaah Mil Jaaye, Tere Ishq Mein Meri Jaan Fanaa Ho Jaaye" As things seem to be turning highly romantic in the lives of the lead couple, one starts getting an impression of yet another love story by YRF. But hold on, that doesn't seem to be entirely the case as there is more to come!

Shocker comes in the form of the last shot of the promo that features the bare-chested well toned body of Aamir Khan (who also sports a white bandana) with Khan pressing the trigger of his pistol at someone (who is not shown in the frame) lying down on the ground.

And did someone say that 'Fanaa' was merely a love story?
